2 février 1933. La police du Mans, appelée par René Lancelin qui ne parvient pas à rentrer chez lui, force le domicile de lancien avoué. On découvre, au premier étage, Mme Lancelin et sa fille, assassinées. Leurs corps sont affreusement mutilés. Au second étage, réfugiées au fond de leur lit, les deux domestiques, Christine et Léa Papin, avouent sans difficulté avoir commis le double meurtre de leurs patronnes.
Le "mystère de laffaire Lancelin " a été la source pendant plus de quarante ans dinterprétations médicales, politiques ou sociales, et à lorigine de nombreuses créations artistiques et littéraires. Il a inspiré tour à tour Jean Genet (Les Bonnes), Jacques Lacan (Le crime des soeurs Papin), Jean-Paul Sartre, Jean-Louis Bory, Jean Vauthier et Nico Papatakis (Les Abysses), Paul Eluard, Benjamin Perret, etc. Mais le livre de Paulette Houdyer reste louvrage de référence sur cette affaire, ne-serait-ce que parce quelle a rencontré lune des criminelles, et que sa parfaite connaissance du milieu dorigine lui a permis de proposer une reconstruction minutieuse du crime, menée à travers les documents darchives, les témoignages des proches et les avis de spécialistes.
